Internships have become more popular in the last couple of years. In order to gain more experience, students are constantly searching for internships to advance in their field of choice, and gain experience. Internships are a unique opportunity to determine what you are interested in, what you are good at, and even what you need to work on. In this growing industry, more and more people are interested in digital advertising, branding, and social media, and Co-op internships are a good opportunity to find out if it is the right field for you. Being an intern myself, I have learned so much about the industry and the way it functions.
There are many different ways to succeed in the workplace, but since an internship is the time to learn, there are three specific tips that will make you stand out. After completing an internship, these are traits that I believe are essential for succeeding.
Always Have a Notebook on Hand
Write everything down! Make sure you are on top of all your work. You should only have to be told how to do something once and it is up to you to make sure you know the deadline, the format, and the content that is to be completed. By having a notebook on hand, you are demonstrating that you are exceptionally organized and are capable of having work delegated to you. It is a way to organize your thoughts and it makes it easier to check off completed work.
Be Organized
Like having a notebook at your desk, by being organized you are showing that you are able to function in a fast-paced work environment and are capable of being a part of the team. Keep your desk organized, your files on your computer labeled and in order, and make sure you are keeping your bosses in the loop so they know that the work is getting done and that you are able to work in their company along with the other members of the team.
Welcome Criticism
As an intern, you are learning and it is likely that you are going to make a mistake along the way. It is a skill to be able to take criticism well, and it is important that you accept any advice or criticism, because at the end of the day it will only help you improve in the workplace.
An internship is one of the best opportunities when entering into a specific field. Don’t waste the opportunity by portraying anything less than your maximum potential. If you are organized, carry around a notebook, go the extra mile and are able to accept criticism positively, you are on the right track!
